What is EO Video?

EO Video is an easy-to-use, fully integrated advanced media player/converter/joiner. It supports three major media engines: Microsoft Media Player, Apple QuickTime and RealNetworks RealMedia. EO Video Player can play all three formats flicker-free. The user interface is designed to be easy to use, with one-click access to reach the features built into EO Video.

What software should be installed on my machine to use EO Video?

Minimal requirements are DirectX and Windows Media Player, which are installed on almost all Windows 9x/2000 systems. If you want to watch QuickTime movies and bitmap files, you should install Apple’s QuickTime Player, to watch RealMedia clips, install RealMedia player.

All the software above is free, check these links.

What do I get if I register EO Video?

EO Video Player module is free for all users. Converter/Joiner module has a 30-day trial perod, after which you have to register to use it . You get full functionality of Converter and Joiner and FREE UPGRADES for at least a year. You'll of also get email notification of upgrades, and expert technical support whenever you need it.

What kind of media files can I make with EO Video?

With the current version of EO Video you can make AVI and MPEG1 files.

Can I capture movies with my capture card directly from EO Video?

Not yet, this version of EO Video doesn't support video or audio capture.

What is a codec?

Codec is an abbreviation for compressor/decompressor - it is a specific method of handling digital video and audio compression and decompression. No single codec is the best for all situations. Some can give you high compression but not excellent quality, other are good for fast moving video (sports videos), some are lossless, etc. The best codec for compressing cartoon animation is usually not very efficient for compressing live-action video.

Which Codec is best?

Choosing an appropriate codec is really a matter of personal preference. Each one produces different results with different source material. Most codecs offer quality and compression adjustments which will also affect the final product. Experiment with the different codecs to determine which options works best for your material.

Newer codecs usually mean better results. High-compression codecs (such as the popular DivX) yield quality media files, but can’t be played on slow machines (<300 MHz Pentium).

Where do I find the missing codec?

You can download it from its official site (most codecs are free). Here are the links to most popular ones.

When I start a WMF or ASF file, there is no picture on screen!

You probably don't have the proper codec installed on your machine.

Try the following procedure:

  1. Be sure you are connected to the Internet.
  2. In Windows Explorer, double-click on the file EO Video couldn't play.
If Windows Media Player can't find the proper codec installed on your machine, it will try to find it on Microsoft's site.
  3. When the proper codec is found, you should confirm codec installation.

Of course, not all codecs originate from Microsoft. Some codecs (the popular DivX for example) should be found, downloaded and installed manually. For links check www.eo-video.com/links.

EO Video informs you when a codec missing. You can check file's codec with the Playlist Item(s) Info or, for AVI clips, with the File Properties dialog box.

Can I play DVDs with EO Video?

Not yet, but the forthcoming version of eo-video [2.0] will include this feature.

Does EO Video supports full screen play?

Not yet, but the forthcoming version of eo-video [2.0] will include this feature.

Can I drag and drop files from other window applications like Windows Explorer?

Yes you can. You can even drop folders - when you do that, all multimedia files within that folder will be inserted in the Playlist (more info here).

How is EO Video Explorer different from Windows Explorer?

Because EO Video Explorer is primarily targeting multimedia files, there are some slight differences between Windows Explorer and EO Video Explorer (more info in EO Video Help).

EO Video uses the Windows Media Player engine to show MPEG files, but I want to use the RealMedia or QuickTime engine instead. Is this possible?

Yes, just use EO Extension Manager to connect MPEG media type to the Real or QuickTime Media engine.

What compression ratio could be achieved with the best codecs?

Audio: the best audio codecs (MP3, RealAudio, ASF) could achieve a compression ratio of 1:100 or more without a noticeable decrease in quality.

Video: the best video codecs (MP4, WMF, DivX, RealVideo) could achieve a compression ratio of 1:500 or more without a noticeable decrease in quality.

Video doesn't play smoothly. What's wrong?

Try to close other applications when playing video. Some video codecs simply need a lot of processor power to decode video. If you have a slower computer (<300Mhz Pentium), some videos simply can't be decompressed fast enough.

Which media engine should I have installed on my machine to view JPEG files?

You can view JPEG files with all three engines (Windows Media Player, RealMedia or QuickTime). You can tell EO Video Player and Converter which engine should be used (click here). Detailed information about the media types supported by each engine can be found here.
